A Roadmap for Investing in the US from the Caribbean
Oct 05, 2026
Investing in the US market from the Caribbean begins long before you place your first trade.
The real advantage comes from building a clear, repeatable process—one that helps you make informed decisions, fund your account efficiently and remain focused on your long-term goals.
Here is a simple roadmap for Caribbean investors who are ready to explore US-listed investments.
1. Strengthen your financial foundation
Before investing, review your cash flow, debt commitments, emergency savings and short-term obligations. Check out our free L.E.A.R.N. Level 1 Course for a framework to get this done well.
Money needed soon should not be exposed to stock-market volatility. Your investment amount should be realistic enough to sustain without disrupting essential expenses.
2. Set a monthly target
Decide how much you can contribute consistently in US dollars, then calculate the local-currency amount required after exchange rates and transfer fees. The best target is not the largest amount you can invest once; it is an amount you can maintain.
3. Create an IBKR Account
Some investors access US securities through a local broker, while others use an international brokerage platform that accepts clients from their country. We recommend Interactive Brokers (IBKR) to access the US markets.

4. Prepare for account verification
IBKR applications require personal and contact details, proof of identity (passport or government ID), proof of address, tax-residency information, employment and source-of-funds information and your financial profile. Provide accurate information, use a secure password and enable multifactor authentication.
Be prepared to call to verify your account.

5. Create a funding plan
Funding can be one of the biggest practical hurdles for Caribbean investors. Depending on your country and provider, options may include an international wire transfer or an eligible bank or payment account. Compare the total cost - not only the advertised transaction fee - and avoid moving small sums so frequently that charges erode your return.
The average fees we’ve seen charged per transfer are between US$35 and US$41 so consider this in your assessment.
It is also wise to plan how you will eventually withdraw funds. Understanding both directions of the process before investing can prevent surprises later.
6. Keep your first portfolio simple
Beginners do not need a long list of stocks. A good place to start is exchange-traded funds (ETFs) - an investment fund that owns a basket of assets like stocks, bonds, or commodities, and is traded on a stock exchange like individual stocks. ETFs offer investors a way to diversify their portfolios and gain exposure to a wide range of markets at a potentially lower cost than purchasing individual assets.
You can start with ETFs until you learn more about the US markets and you are able to add individual stocks.
7. Commit to learning
Your first investment is not the finish line. Continue learning how orders work, how fees affect returns, how taxes apply to your circumstances and how to evaluate the investments you own.
At Learn Grow Invest, our message is simple: education first, action second and consistency always. A thoughtful process can help you move from merely watching the US market to participating in it with greater clarity and confidence.
Your next step: Write down your monthly target, preferred funding route and the first three investments you intend to research. Do not buy yet—build the plan first.
Our L.E.A.R.N. Level 2 Accelerator teaches our research methodology which bolsters your ability to identify the right stocks for your portfolio. Register today to reap the benefits.
